In 8vo, contemporary fine leather very slightly rubbed at corners, spine richly gilt, a fine 16th century binding still intact, text clean and bright, complete [14], 176p., [26], overall in very good plus condition. The History of Manassis cover from the creation of the world up to 1081 and was written after initiation by the Byzantine Princess Irini in the 12th century. It was a very influential history that time and was translated in several Slavic languages. Manassis history became very popular as he tried to avoid the classical style and wrote emphasizing in human passions and dramatic representations This first edition was printed in Latin, the Greek original had finally printed almost a century later. Johannes Leunclavius, who translated the text, was working directly from Greek manuscripts he found in the East. Leunclavius visited Constantinople and Greece during the 1560s. Manasses wrote in 15-syllable verse, but Leunclavius translated it into elegant Latin prose. This made the history feel more convenient to Western readers of the time. Very rare
