Mandeville 14th century travel account was the medieval bestseller, for centuries was celebrated as an English knight who travelled the world. His account contain a surprisingly accurate travel account through Greece to the Holy Land and the marvels of the East where it becomes legendary. Mandeville includes accounts for Rhodes, Cyprus, Mount Athos, Limnos, Constantinople (the Greek capital as per his words) and some other islands The 1839 London edition of The Voiage and Travaile of Sir John Maundeville is a milestone in the history of this famous, albeit largely fictional, travelogue. Published during the early Victorian era, it represented a major revival of interest in medieval literature. This edition was prepared by J.O. Halliwell, one of the most famous Shakespearean scholars and antiquarians of the 19th century. Halliwell based this version on the Cotton Manuscript (Titus C. xvi) in the British Museum, which is considered one of the most complete and authentic versions of the English text from the 14th century. It includes numerous woodcut illustrations that were copied from earlier manuscripts and early printed editions. These illustrations capture the "monsters" and "marvels" Mandeville claimed to have seen, such as the Sciapods, people with one giant foot used as an umbrella and the Cynocephali, dog-headed people. It includes an extensive Introduction and Glossary by Halliwell to help 19th-century readers navigate the difficult 14th-century vocabulary. By the time this edition was published, the academic world was starting to realize that "Sir John Mandeville" likely never existed and certainly never traveled to all the places he described.
