This publication is a cornerstone of the Portuguese Enlightenment. The translation was not merely a linguistic exercise, it was a philosophical project to align the Ancient Stoic virtues of Epictetus with the 18th century Portuguese morality. It follow the Greek text published by Gronovius, this indicate that the Lisbon edition was aiming for the highest level of academic and philological accuracy of the time. Antonio de Sousa de Macedo was one of the important Portuguese Philhellenes, the publication was sponsored by the Portuguese government and published by the Typographia Regia.Epictetus was a favorite philosopher of the Portuguese Enlightenment,his focus on what we can and cannot control provided a bridge between the old scholastic traditions and the new rationalist ideas flowing then into Portugal.
