[ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΣ ΓΕΩΡΓΙΑΔΗΣ] –DEMETRIUS GEORGIADES: LA TURQUIE ACTUELLE, LES PEUPLES AFFRANCHIS DU JOUG OTTOMAN ET LES INTERETS FRANCAIS EN ORIENT. PARIS 1892 First edition, in large Quarto, contemporary leather over boards slightly rubbed, covers trimmed, complete 377p., text clean and bright, very few scattered spotting in few pages, overall in very good condition. Georgiades was a Greek native from Smyrna. His account is a critical high stakes political and economic analysis of the situation of the Ottoman Levant in the late 19th century.Georgiades, as many Greeks of the Ottoman realm, was caught between loyalty to the Sultan and the rising Hellenic nationalism. He was economist and had clear picture that Turkey was drowning in debt and was under intense pressure from the Europeans He analyzed the administration, the finances, the different ethnicities and the social frame of the country. As a native and very educated his information is very accurate, his lengthy account is a detailed analysis of the situation. As many inhabitants of Smyrna traditionally linked to the French since the 16th century,he was afraid of the obvious economic and cultural presentation of the Germans in the area after the 1880s and looked to initiate with his book a French resurgence on the area to stop Ottoman oppression. The economic, social and ethnographic analysis is of prime value. Rare
