The discovery of the manuscript of Photius Biblioteca in the Vatican Library was a major discovery and shed light in the Ancient Greek world. Photius (c.815-893) prepared in the 9th century a collection of extracts and abridgements of 280 volumes of classical authors, the original of which are now, to a great extent, lost. Includes almost all the minor Ancient Greek geographers and travelers of the ancient world known today only from their extracts preserved in Photius work. Several very early accounts of ancient travels and ancient geography had been first published with the publication of Myriobiblon in the 17th century. To Photios we are indebted for almost all we possess of Ctesias, Memnon of Heraclea, Conon, the lost books of Diodorus and the lost writings of Arrianus. A major contribution to the preservation of Ancient Greek knowledge and culture.
