A very good set. The Emperor Manouel Palaiologos (1350-1425) was the author of several works. He was so educated that he could easily discussed in debt all matters with the most educated people of his time. In the dialogues with a Persian, in Angyra (Ankara),where he was as auxiliary, practical a hostage of the Turkish Sultan, tried to understand the Islamic substructure of the continuous conquest of the Greek lands and the nature of Muslim ideology. He testified the ruinous situation of Anatolia after the Turkish conquest. His writings is a unique testimony for late medieval Asia Minor. In Paris and London,where he was the only Emperor who paid State visits, impressed the local professors for his deep knowledge of Ancient Greek writers. The advises to his own son and successor Ioanni Palaiologo is a mature work on governance of an Empire in deep crisis. It represents the last phase of the medieval Greek statehood, completely pressed under two huge dangers, the Ottoman continuous conquest and the western commercial dominance. Pope Francis in 2006 used a fragment of Manuel work and provoked reactions in Muslim world. The nature of Turkish threat with a Muslim cloak was well understood by Manuel and is omnipresent in his writings. Some letters in this work deal specifically with this matter.
