VENEZIA 1634 Third edition,first one in FOLIO, of this rare Venetian account on the Fourth crusade and the fall of Constantinople in 1204, contemporary full vellum soiled with some few wear at edges, manuscript title on spine, some very light scattered spotting in few pages, text clean and bright, complete [3] title 279p., [36], three full page engravings of Byzantine Emperors, depicting Michael Paleologos his wife and son in official costumes, this edition was dedicated to the famous French cardinal Richelieu (who financed this luxurious Folio publication) overall very good. Paolo Ramusio was a Venetian Historian. He was the very first to compile a detailed account on the events of the fourth crusade. He had the chance to search in the rich Venetian archives 400 years ago, when several original rapports and accounts from the 13th century were still available there. He followed Villeharduin separation in six chapters to operate better his own work. Mostly a neglected actually chronicle of high value as it is based in a tremendous amount of prime material and refer to unrecorded otherwise events. The Venetian rapports on the subject had always a very partial view but this minus is overcame in the chronicle by the amount and the first hand provided information. Ramusio chronicle, in some events, seems to be rather closer to Choniates text than Villeharduin account, a prove of a very early serious historical research, his account is praised by the recent researchers (Serban Marin: A Humanist vision of the 4th crusade, the Chronicle of Paulo Ramusio,2000).
