Moncada, an early 17th century Spanish historian, compiled the first comprehensive account of the Catalan expedition in Asia Minor and Greece in early 14th century, based mostly in the manuscript travel account compiled by Montaner, but also in other Catalan accounts. It is a primordial source for events in Greece and Asia Minor in early 14th century and provides fine topographical, economic, ethnological and historical first hand information. The Catalane Company, a mercenary army had been hired by the Byzantines to fight the Turks in Asia Minor. After their initial successes, they had requested their payment, but the Byzantines were short of money and they had executed their leaders. The Spanish mercenary army rebelled, pillaged Thrace and Macedonia and finally, after 6 years of wandering around Greece, they arrived in South Greece, crashed the local French knights at Orhomenos (1311) and the Aragonese have established a realm in Athens up to the late 14th century.
