Michel Naud (1631-1684) travelled to the Levant in 1673-4 in the entourage of the French Ambassador to Constantinople Marquis de Nointel (see lot 34). A numerous team of French, Spanish, Greeks and few Muslims travelled overland from Constantinople through Anatolia to Syria before reaching Palestine for a pilgrimage. A very early detailed accurate travel description of all important places around the Holy Land is provided by Naud. He describes the visited places accurately with a mindset of a much later, experienced traveler and not with the usual 17th century religious traveler’s optic.
