First edition. In 8vo contemporary full leather slightly rubbed, edges of spine cheeped, upper joint slightly split in upper part, complete [18] 671p., text clean and bright, overall in very good condition.
Michel Naud (1631-1684) travelled to the Levant in 1673-4 in the entourage of the French Ambassador to Constantinople Marquis de Nointel (see lot 34). A numerous team of French, Spanish, Greeks and few Muslims travelled overland from Constantinople through Anatolia to Syria before reaching Palestine for a pilgrimage. A very early detailed accurate travel description of all important places around the Holy Land is provided by Naud. He describes the visited places accurately with a mindset of a much later, experienced traveler and not with the usual 17th century religious traveler’s optic. Not in Atabey, Blackmer 1185(for the second edition of 1702). The first edition is rare
