Horner (1772-1831), a Swiss Philhellene was a scholar obsessed with the artistic continuity of Greece. He played a massive role in the intellectual defense of the Greek Revolution. This luxurious and expensive publication has been published during the peak of the Revolution and had been financed by Eynard and other Swiss Philhellenes. The book served as a cultural propaganda and boosted Philhellenism in the high level circles. He described the civilization that the Ottomans are occupying and ask to protect the cradle of Western art. The fine plates were intended to be used by artists and students as models for drawing, spreading Greek art. They include a rare double page contemporary view of Athens and some other places in Greece. It is a prime example of Swiss printing precision and of early lithographs.
