JOHANN CARNE:REISE IM ORIENT.JENA 1827
First edition, in 8vo, modern leather over boards, complete 232p., text clean and bright, overall in very good condition.
A rare publication of a travel account all around the Levant.Carne visited Greece during the revolution. He had a sharp eye for social customs,he describes the manners of the Greek captains and the hospitality of the islanders. To his eyes there was a stark contrast between the Ottomans and the Greek rebels. His account fueled Philhellenism in Germany and the contemporary Griechenland-Begeisterung. The relation of the journey is romantic and descriptive,he focused less on the battles and more of the feelings. Jena was a powerhouse of German philosophy and science at the time.
