PARIS 1829 First edition, IMPERIAL FOLIO, an impressive book, contemporary leather over boards, slightly rubbed and trimmed at spine, text and plates with some light scattered inoffensive spotting, more intense in very few places, complete 100p., and 27 plates, an extra manuscript tipped in, dedication par Koliades in front past dawn, overall in very good condition. Konstantinos Koliades, the author, pretended to be professor in the Ionian Academy in Corfu. Modern research revealed that the co-author is possibly Professor Nikolaos Maniakis from Ithaca, together with Lechevalier. Lechevalier probably contributed in the publication and provided the maps,no Greek could draw so sophisticated maps in the 1820s. But certainly a Greek was strongly involved in. Definitely, Koliades is a pseudonym and the contributor is certainly an educated Greek with roots in the Ionian Islands. Maniakis leaved in Paris in late 1820s and collaborated there with Lechevalier. This book is famous, as had presented one of the most eccentric theories in classical scholarship,he argued that Homer did not exist,he claimed that Odysseas himself wrote the Iliad and the Odyssey to chronicle his own adventures and he used his intimate knowledge of the geography of Ithaca and the other Ionian islands that only an eyewitness could have described the landscape so accurately. The book is valuable as it contain many beautiful lithographs after original drawings from the Ionian islands and as a Greek effort to contribute in the international debate on a high valued subject, as the origins of Homeric epics. There is no doubt that it is a derivative with direct link with the Greek Enlightenment. This generation of Greeks, at the 1820s, were quite ready to contribute ideas on matters regarding their ancient ancestors.
