STOCKHOLM n.d. but 1878 First edition, in large 8vo, contemporary publishers richly decorated hard covers with few wear, complete in two volumes 932p., continuous pagination, richly illustrated with 22 full pages woodcuts and 130 further on the text, text clean and bright, overall in very good condition. A comprehensive account for the Levant published during the Congress of Berlin and the crisis of 1878. Based on some material provided by the Austrians Hellwald and Beck for general remarks on the Ottoman state, otto Alund (1822-1901) and P. Thunman, two of the leading Swedish scholars of the time, composed a detailed account for all the areas of the Ottoman Levant. The first volume contain large chapters on Thessaly, Epirus, Macedonia and Thrace, the second that cover the Asiatic parts, contain descriptions of Cyprus, Rhodes, Kos, Lesvos and the rest of the Aegean islands. They focused on the ethnic composition of the several places, the trade and resources of the areas and the customs of the people. Rare and extensive Scandinavian accounts for many Greek areas.
