ΜΕΝΑΝΔΡΟΥ: ΕΠΙΤΡΕΠΟΝΤΕΣ – ΠΕΡΙΚΕΙΡΟΜΕΝΗ – ΣΑΜΙΑ – ΓΕΩΡΓΟΣ – ΚΙΘΑΡΙΣΤΗΣ – ΚΟΛΑΞ – ΗΡΩΣ in LUIS NICOLAU DE OLWER: EL TEATRO DE MENANDRO. BARCELONA 1911 Second edition of Samia, Epitrepontes and Perikeiromene and of several other segments from other comedies of Menandros, the most important Comedian writer of Ancient Greece after Aristophanes. Large 4to, contemporary leather over boards with very few wear, complete 332p.,, some light scattered spotting in few pages, text clean and bright, text in the original Greek with Spanish translation, overall in very good condition. Most of Menander s work did not survive the Middle Age except as short fragments. This changed in 1907 with the discovery of the Cairo codex which contained large parts of several comedies, as Samia, Perikeiromene, Epitrepontes and other fragments. They have been published in Cairo in an almost unobtainable Egyptian edition by Lefebvre. This Barcelona edition with extensive general presentation of Menander comedies by De Olwer was his doctoral dissertation. It present for the second time the newly discovered comedies with translation in Spanish. The book is divided in two sections. The first (of around 100 pages) contain a detailed account on the Athenian comedy, the Menander s comedies and the later Roman imitations. After in a second chapter, with the title los nuevos fragmentos, it has published in the original Greek the full body of all newly discovered then comedies of Menander. A very important publication which spread Menander,for the very first time, outside the inner circle of Greek archaeologists and speakers by providing a translation in a western language.
