CHARLES PERTUSIER: Promenades Pittoresques dans Constantinople et sur les rives du Bosphore. Paris 1815
First edition, complete in three volumes of text, without the separately published atlas issued two years later. In 8vo 21 x 14 cm, large uncut copy in publisher’s original light brown paper covers with printed titles on spines, a very rare state of binding,
fresh from the press (!). Text clean and bright. Paper covers slightly dusty and rubbed at the edges, very few isolated light spots on some pages. Complete: 437 p., 467 p., 476 p. Overall a very good plus set for early book lovers.
Pertusier’s travel account in Constantinople is among the best for the early 19th-century city. The text follows the author’s strolls around the city and its environs, interspersed with observations on the customs and dress of the multinational resident population, on the beauty of the Greek language and literature, and more.
A very rare state, uncut in publisher’s covers, exactly as issued.
