Samson Cerfberr (1780–1826), a French Jew, joined the Ottoman army as a mercenary in 1813 and converted to Islam. He wandered widely in the Levant in the following years, especially in the Morea, having Nafplio as his base. He held office at the court of Ali Pasha between 1816 and 1819. Returning to France in the early 1820s, he wrote this work at the peak of the Greek Revolution. He provides a very detailed picture of Greece by an eyewitness on the eve of the Revolution.
