IBRAHIM MANZOUR EFENDI: Memoires sur la Grece et l Albanie pendant le gouvernement d Ali Pasha. Paris 1827 First edition. In 8vo 22 x 14 cm, fine Russian red leather over marbled boards, spine richly gilt, edges marbled, a fine contemporary binding. Text clean and bright, with a few light foxing spots on some isolated pages. Complete: half title, portrait, title, [39], 415 p. [1]. Overall in almost fine condition, a lovely copy. Samson Cerfberr (1780–1826), a French Jew, joined the Ottoman army as a mercenary in 1813 and converted to Islam. He wandered widely in the Levant in the following years, especially in the Morea, having Nafplio as his base. He held office at the court of Ali Pasha between 1816 and 1819. Returning to France in the early 1820s, he wrote this work at the peak of the Greek Revolution. He provides a very detailed picture of Greece by an eyewitness on the eve of the Revolution.
