GEORG LUDWIG von MAURER: Das Griechische Volk in Offentlicher, Kirchlicher und Privat - Rechtlicher Beziehung vor und nach dem Freiheitskampfe bis zum 31 Juli 1834. Heidelberg 1835 First edition. In 8vo 21 x 14 cm, contemporary decorated hard covers, a nice binding with very light wear, edges gilt. Text with some scattered spotting. Complete in two volumes: [20], 596 p.; [12], 540 p. Overall in very good condition. A monumental work on Greek history, society, and customs in the early 19th century. Von Maurer (1790–1872) was chosen in 1832 as a member of the Regency Council (Αντιβασιλεία) during the minority of Othon. He applied himself energetically to the task of creating institutions adapted to the requirements of a modern civilized community for the new state, but grave difficulties arose from internal opposition, and he was recalled to Munich in 1834. This loss was a serious one for Greece. Soon after, he published this account, a highly valuable source for the first years of Greece as an independent state. An imposing work, absent from all relevant collections.
