JOHN OLDMIXON: Gleanings from Piccadilly to Pera. London 1854 First edition. 8vo (19x13 cm). Original blue cloth with attractive gilt decoration on cover and spine, slightly rubbed, all edges gilt. Text clean and bright with very few isolated light spots on a small number of pages. Complete: [10], 409 p., and four fine chromolithographed plates of the Levant as called for. Overall in very good condition. A detailed description of Constantinople in the early 1850s. The author spent several months in the city and provides vivid accounts ranging from the dress of the inhabitants to lodging houses, and from despotic institutions to public festivities. On his return journey, he also visited Smyrna, Chios, and Alexandria. A scarce and attractive travel account.
