COMPTE DE FICQUELMONT: Le cote religieux de la Question d Orient, l Eglise Grecque Orientale les refugies Politiques en Orient. Paris 1854 First edition. Large 8vo (22x14 cm). In original publisher’s paper covers, text with foxing throughout. Complete: [2], 164 p., [4]. Overall in good plus condition. Ficquelmont (1777–1857) was an Austrian diplomat of French descent who later became Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Austrian Empire. Written during the Crimean War, this account examines the Greek Church in the Levant and proposes strengthening it as a counterbalance to Russian influence through Orthodoxy. The book also addresses the status of the Holy Places in Jerusalem and its surroundings, a question that was finally settled by treaty the following year and has essentially remained unchanged up to the present day. Remarkably, Ficquelmont’s proposals anticipated and secured Greek control over several Levantine shrines, a situation that persists to this day. A scarce and historically significant account of the Levant.
