JEAN ZVALLARD : Il Devotissimo Viaggio di Gierusalemme fatto e descritto in sei libri… l anno 1586. Roma 1595 Second edition. In 8vo (17 × 12 cm). Contemporary full vellum, soiled; part of head of spine missing, spine stabilized. Text with some uniform browning and scattered spotting; occasional waterstain in the first 30 pages. Illustrated with fifty (50) engraved plates by Natale Bonifacio (including maps and views). Overall a very good copy of a five-century-old book. Zuallart’s account of his travels in Greece and the Levant first appeared in 1587, but this edition contains some different plates. All were engraved by Natale Bonifacio after the author’s own drawings, as Zuallart himself explains, made during his six-month pilgrimage to Palestine in 1586. The work includes lengthy descriptions of Crete and especially Cyprus, as well as accounts of several smaller Greek islands and other places en route to the Holy Land. One of the finest travel accounts of the 16th century, very richly illustrated with splendid views and maps of Greece and the Levant. References: Blackmer 1874; not in Atabey.
