JAMES EMERSON: Letters from the Aegean. New York 1829
First American edition (first published the same year in smaller format in London). In 8vo 23 x 15 cm, modern leather over boards. Complete: title, [10], 248 p. Some scattered foxing and spotting. Overall in almost very good condition.
Emerson arrived in Greece in 1823 but left disillusioned following the death of Byron. He returned in 1825 and became
war correspondent of The Times. He fought in a naval action under
Miaoulis and at the battle of
Lerna under
Makriyannis, where Makriyannis defeated the Egyptians.
A strong Philhellenic work. The American edition is the rarest and played an important role in raising additional funds for Howe projects in Greece.
