A monumental work on Greek history, society, and customs in the early 19th century. Von Maurer (1790–1872) was chosen in 1832 as a member of the Regency Council (Αντιβασιλεία) during the minority of
Othon. He applied himself energetically to the task of creating institutions adapted to the requirements of a modern civilized community for the new state, but grave difficulties arose from internal opposition, and he was recalled to
Munich in 1834. This loss was a serious one for Greece.
Soon after, he published this account, a highly valuable source for the first years of Greece as an independent state.
An imposing work, absent from all relevant collections.
