BAYARD TAYLOR: Travels in Greece and Russia with an excursion to Crete. New York 1859 First edition. In 8vo (18x13 cm), contemporary leather over boards, edges gilt. Text clean and bright. Complete: frontis, title, [4], 428 p., [6]. With manuscript ownership inscription of William St Clair, leading Hellenist, on front pastedown. Overall in fine condition, with excellent provenance, a lovely copy. Taylor, an American traveler, visited Greece in the late 1850s. He provides a very detailed account of contemporary life in Athens, and toured extensively through the Morea and Evia before continuing to Crete. More than 300 pages of the work are devoted to his Greek travels, offering an exhaustive and vivid account of mid-19th century Greece.
