ΒΙΚΕΛΑΣ ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΣ [Vikelas D.]: La Grece Byzantine and Moderne. Paris, Didot 1893. First and only edition. In 8vo (21x12 cm). Modern leather over boards, preserving the original publisher’s printed front paper cover (detached). Text clean and bright. Complete: 431 p. Overall in very good condition. A scarce publication by Dimitrios Vikelas (1835–1908), one of the most important Greek writers of the 19th century and first President of the International Olympic Committee. Written during his long residence in Paris (until 1897),this work is among the first systematic studies of the continuity between Byzantium and modern Greece. It provides an exhaustive presentation of Byzantine Greece, the Greek Revolution, and the development of the modern Greek State as the direct heir of Byzantium, according to Vikelas. A rare work, with only one recorded copy in Greece (Thessaloniki University Library).
