Significant news regarding the torching of the Ottoman Flagship at Chios: Three Greek fire ships, disguised as merchant vessels and laden with brushwood and combustibles, had anchored at Thymiana, Chios, near the Ottoman fleet. Having gone unnoticed, they approached the Turkish flagship on the night of June 6 and set it ablaze. The Turkish sailors attempted to extinguish the fire, but the ship blew up. The body of the Kapudan Pasha was found floating in the sea and was buried on Chios the following day.The death of the Kapudan Pasha is a major loss for the Ottomans. Kara Mehmet Pasha, currently stationed in Patras, is to be his successor in this post. It is rumored that Larissa and Athens have been captured by the Greeks. Khurshid Pasha has ceded the stronghold of Kakosouli to one of Ali Pasha’s grandsons. The sale of Christian slaves has been temporarily prohibited. The Egyptian fleet has landed 8,000 soldiers on Crete. Before reaching the island, the fleet encountered 70 Greek ships preparing to attack Crete; the Egyptians managed to capture 27 vessels, while many others were sunk.The widow of Ali Pasha has arrived in Constantinople. There, the Ottomans treated her with great respect, hosting her in a very fine residence. In this manner, the Turks are attempting to extract information regarding Ali Pasha’s hidden treasures.
