JOHN HAYMAN:TRAVELS THROUGH PARTS OF EUROPE, ASIA MINOR THE ISLANDS OF THE ARCHIPELAGO, EGYPT, SYRIA, MOUNT SINA. LONDON 1759 First edition, large 8vo, contemporary full leather with light wear, spine richly gilt, marbled edges, text clean and bright, complete the travel of Heyman to the Levant, [10],376p.[16] and two folded copper engraved plates, but without the other volume which contain a completely independent travel by Egmont, overall in very good condition. Heyman was professor of Oriental studies in Leiden who travelled extensively in the Levant in the early 18th century. The work was originally written in Dutch but translated with an other Dutch travel account in English to satisfy the British public growing obsession with the Levant. Heyman s observations are academic and accurate focused on languages, monuments and customs.
