SAMUEL ODMAN:JOHAN MARITIS RESA UTI SYRIEN, PALESTINA OCH PA CYPERN.STOCKHOLM 1790 First edition, small 8vo, contemporary leather over boards, edges red, text clean and bright, overall in almost fine condition, a lovely copy of a scarce work. Samuel Odman (1750-1829), one of the most important Sweedish scholars and naturalist of the late 18th century, disciple of Linnaeus travelled in Eastern Mediterranean in the early 1770s,when he was very young, following the previous paths of Hasselquist. They belonged to the same team, pupils of Linnaeus. After the publication of Mariti s account on Syria and Cyprus,he presented this work based on Mariti s account who lived in Cyprus, coupled with several of his own observations on the sites.Odman did not simply translated Mariti account. As a scientist, odman added his own notes particularly regarding the flora, fauna and geography of Cyprus and Syria. The account includes also some, but not all, of Mariti s own observations. It is a kind of critical analysis of Mariti work. A very rare work on Cyprus
