But 1884 First and only edition, in modern book case as replica of a 19th century volume leather over cloth, labeled on spine the Castle of Bodrum, inside a typed explanation sheet (dated from the 1930s) and 59 original 19th century lithographs in 55 sheets, most numbered, with very few wear in some extremities, unopened and in almost fine condition. Spackman was in the British team which excavated Halicarnassus with Newton in the 1850s. He produced many drawings (British Museum MS 30,998) from the place, some were depicting vestiges of the Knights of Saint John on the castle (inscriptions, armories etc). Tyssen-Amherst (1835-1909), one of the finest British collectors and “Orientalist” of the late 19th century announced a special publication for the links of the castle of Bodrum with the knights of Saint John.Despite a written announcement in 1884, the special publication never appeared. In 1921 some printed sets of these plates were discovered in a warehouse with notes that linked them with the failed publication. A magnificent set of 59 lithographs depicting fine armories and inscriptions of the Knights of Rhodes in their medieval castle at Halicarnassus, miraculously saved and planned for a publication that never finished.
