Large in 4to, contemporary leather over boards, text remarkably clean for a manual, with only some light wear in few pages, complete all edicts, overall in very good condition. As France developed by the 18th century several trading outposts (echelles) in the Levant, a manual, containing all official regulations, for the Consuls was of great need. This a group of official French trade regulations, concentrated in one book in the turn of 18th/19th centuries for practical use somewhere in the Levant. These publications by their nature mostly have been lost, but included invaluable information for the trade and the overall daily life in the Levant, as the consul acted as a notary for all French subjects and as a leader of the local Levantine community. According the Capitulations all foreign subjects in the Levant and their actions were under the rules of their nation. The book includes an amazing collection of documents and provisions from heritages formulas up to trade negotiations actions, from formulas for purchases of sailing boats, to auctions of merchandises, etc. Each outpost in the Levant was governed by a Committee elected by the local traders under the Consul. These books were the manuals according them,each Consul governed the trade post and all people under his jurisdiction.From the several vice consuls, the assembly of each outpost, the mariners, the shipment cargos or shipwrecks, the logistics, up to the uniforms, everything was planned and regulated. First two publications contain the general framework. Third publication is the detailed regulations,forth the instructions for the application on each case, last publication provide the clauses towards the Ottomans An invaluable primary source, a rarity, absent from all major collections for the Levant
