Darvaris (1757-1823) was one of the leading figures of Greek Enlightenment.With provenance from Macedonia,he lived mostly in Vienna where he spent his life to educate the younger generations of Greeks and published educational books. This particular publication, the Four Encomiastic Poems to the Emperors of Austria and Russia, is a fine example of the political strategy of the Greeks at the eve of the Greek Revolution. Vienna was a thriving center of the Greek Enlightenment and with these Encomiums Darvaris was engaging in a form of cultural diplomacy trying to align the cause of Greek liberty with the interests of these powers.Darvaris wrote in the classic Pindaric style,he used high level Archaic Greek to show to the Europeans that modern Greeks were the direct descendants of the Ancients.
