Sonnini Charles-Nicolas: Reise nach Griechenland und der Turkei. Berlin 1801 First edition in German, in 8vo 20 x 12 cm, contemporary leather over boards, spine richly gilt, one board slightly rubbed. Text clean and bright. Complete: 414 p. and a fine folded copper-engraved view of a birth in Greece. Overall in very good condition. Sonnini traveled in Greece and the Levant in 1778–80, but his account was published only in 1801 in French and German. He visited several islands of the Cyclades and Dodecanese in the Archipelago, Crete and Cyprus, as well as Thessaloniki and Smyrna. Very few 18th-century travel accounts on Thessaloniki exist, and for some of the smaller Aegean islands Sonnini’s account is unique. This German edition includes a beautiful view of Greek ladies weaving on the coastline of Kimolos Island, clearly based on a design made on the spot. References: Blackmer 1572, Atabey 1156. The German edition is rare.
